Spermidine has been shown to increase longevity in various model organisms, including yeast, worms, flies, mice, and human cells1. The mechanisms by which spermidine exerts its anti-aging effects is primarily through autophagy, a process by which cells degrade and recycle damaged components, leading to better cellular health and longevity.

Autophagy is a natural cellular process that helps maintain cellular homeostasis by degrading and recycling damaged proteins and organelles. As we age, the efficiency of autophagy decreases, leading to a buildup of damaged cellular components and an increased risk of age-related diseases⁶. Spermidine has been found to induce autophagy by altering the acetylation status of the chromatin, resulting in reduced oxidative stress and an extended life span of yeast, flies and worms, and human immune cells⁵.

A human epidemiological study that investigated the association between dietary intake of spermidine and all cause mortality, found that nutrition rich in spermidine is linked to increased survival in humans⁷.

Spermidine also supports healthy brain function. The latest research has demonstated the beneficial effects of dietary spermidine intake on cognitive performance in flies, mice, and
humans³. High dietary spermidine intake improved cognitive function in animal models, and in epidemiological studies correlated with a reduced risk of cognitive impairment in humans. The cognitive improvements were in part due to increased mitochondrial respiration in neuronal animal tissues, which was dependent on autophagy.
